EUGENE, Ore. — Ty Anderson became the 14th All-American in UTSA men's track & field history on Friday evening when he earned second-team honors by viritue of his 12th-place finish in the high jump at the NCAA Championships.
Anderson, who was coming off a 10th-place performance at the NCAA Championships Preliminary Rounds, cleared 7-0 ¼ (2.14m) on his third and final attempt at the height and that came on the heels of a clearance of 6-10 ¼ (2.09m) on his first try of the competition. However, the sophomore from Luling was unable to get over the bar in his three subsequent attempts at 7-2 ¼ (2.19m), which would have been a new personal best. USC's Randall Cunningham, the son of former National Football League star Randall Cunningham, won the event with his leap of 7-4 ½ (2.25m).
"I'm glad I was able to represent UTSA on the big stage today," Anderson said. "Seeing the competition out there made me realize how hard I have to work this offseason to get to the next level. I'm proud of what I've accomplished so far and can't wait to see what next year brings."
"Ty was able to come out and perform well in this national competition," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox said. "He didn't let the pressure get to him and I'm extremely proud of him."
Anderson is the second UTSA high jumper to earn outdoor All-America accolades, as Keith Benford leaped to honorable mention honors back in 2011 following a 23rd-place effort.
The Roadrunners now have seen 14 athletes combine for a total of 30 All-America certificates in program history and UTSA has featured at least one All-American in each of the past 10 seasons, all of which have come under the direction of Fox.
