Gonzalez tied for lead, UTSA in third after opening day of Chattanooga Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Ana Gonzalez is tied for the individual lead and the UTSA women's golf team has a share of third place after the opening day of the Chattanooga Classic, which teed off on Sunday at Council Fire Golf Course (par 72/6,234 yards).
 
Gonzalez fired a 2-under-par 70 in the first round to move to the top of the leaderboard along with Chattanooga's Esme Hamilton and East Carolina's Julie Boysen Hollestad. A super senior from Monterrey, Mexico, the four-time all-conference performer and UTSA's career scoring average leader wrote down four birdies on the day, including three as part of a 2-under 34 on the front nine. 
 
The Roadrunners are tied with East Carolina for third in the 20-team field after posting a 297, one shot behind Yale and only three strokes out of the lead held by North Florida. UTSA is one shot ahead of Central Arkansas and five in front of a tie for sixth between Chattanooga, Colorado State, Old Dominion and Southern Miss.
 
Hannah Holzmann posted an even-par 72 on Sunday, as the senior all-conference performer wrote down birdies on the 354-yard, par-4 eighth and 521-yard, par-5 11th holes. The San Antonio product is in a tie for sixth place in the 105- person field.
 
Nicole Polivchak is in a tie for 35th after registering a 76 on the strength of 14 pars, while Camryn Carreon provided the other counting score with a 79 that was highlighted by back-to-back birdies on Nos. 2-3 to put her in a tie for 60th. Hunter Nugent rounds out the lineup in 70th (80).
 
The second round is slated for Monday.
