FRISCO, Texas – Lapraisjah Johnson scored a career-high 21 points as the West No. 7 seeded UTSA women's basketball team dropped a 65-45 decision to East No. 3 seeded Old Dominion Wednesday afternoon in the second round of the 2022 Heritage Landscape Supply Group Conference USA Basketball Championship at the Ford Center at the Star.
The Roadrunners stayed close most of the game, but couldn't overcome a fourth-quarter scoring surge from the Monarchs.
Old Dominion started with five consecutive points to gain an early lead. Elyssa Coleman put the first points on the board for UTSA at the 7:37 mark. The Monarchs hits 3-pointer to extend the lead, but Lapraisjah Johnson made a layup and drew a foul to start a 5-0 run to make it a one point game, 8-7, with 4:48 on the clock. ODU made a free throw and Chantel Govan followed to tie the game 9-9 at thee 4:01 mark. The teams tied up the game once more, 11-11, until the Monarchs finished on an 8-0 run to lead 19-11 at the end of the first.
In the second, it was a battle as the teams went back and forth scoring as Old Dominion outscored the Roadrunners by one, 10-9, to lead 29-20. In the final three minutes, UTSA went on a 6-2 run to bridge the gap and trail 31-26 at the half.
The Monarchs continued their momentum in the third, coming out of the locker room on a 9-3 run to lead 40-29 with 6:05 remaining. The battle continued in the remaining four minutes as the teams went back and forth making shots until the Roadrunners finished on a 5-0 run to trail 45-39 going to the fourth.
In the fourth, Old Dominion extended its lead, hitting a 5-0 run to start the final 10 minutes. Over the next six minutes, each team hit short runs as they scored six points each, but a 9-0 from the Monarchs to close out the game clinched the win.
