Carreon posts 10th career top-10 finish at Jim West Challenge

SAN MARCOS, Texas — Camryn Carreon fired a 5-under-par 67 and posted her 10th career top-10 finish to lead the UTSA women's golf team to 14th place at the Jim West Challenge, which wrapped up on Monday at Kissing Tree Golf Club (par 72/6,163 yards).

Carreon matched her collegiate-best score with her 67 that featured seven birdies, tying the second-lowest round in program history in the process. The San Antonio native moved up 16 places in the individual standings on the final day, ending up with a share of eighth place for her second top 10 of the fall slate.

After opening the 54-hole event with a 74-72—146 on Sunday, Carreon equaled the 67 she registered in the final round of the 2022 NCAA Franklin Regional, which vaulted her into fourth place and a berth into the NCAA Championships as the first Roadrunner to advance that far in the postseason. She had five of her birdies as part of a 33 on the front nine and finished this week with a team-high 12 birdies, the third-best total in the field.

Behind Carreon, UTSA placed 14th with an 893, bouncing back from a pair of 301s on Sunday with a 291 today. The Roadrunners were 11 shots ahead of Missouri and only five strokes behind No. 33 New Mexico in the field that included eight nationally ranked squads.

Daniela Abonce carded a 3-over 219 to finish in a tie for 31st. The freshman from Veracruz, Mexico, opened with a 1-under 71 and bounced back from a 76 on Sunday afternoon with an even-par 72 that was headlined by four birdies.

Olivia Williams and Morgan Ellison tied for 70th (80-76-74—230) and 72nd (76-77-78—231), respectively, while Lauren Rios was 79th (84-80-82—246).

No. 27 Oklahoma State won the team title by two shots ahead of No. 21 SMU. No. 25 Houston, 34th-ranked Texas Tech and Tulane rounded out the top five.
