Roadrunners ready for C-USA Championships on Saturday morning

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will travel to Denton, Texas, to race in the Conference USA Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Pioneer Soccer Park.

The women's 6,000-meter run is slated to start at 9 a.m. followed by the men's 8k at 10 a.m.

The Roadrunners will line up against Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Rice, UAB, UTEP and WKU.

UTSA finished eighth in the men's race a year ago in Charlotte, North Carolina. Jake Smith led the way by clocking an 8k time of 25:43.0 to finish as the top Roadrunner for the second straight at the conference meet.

The women placed 12th behind an all-conference showing from Maddie Boswell, who crossed 11th with a 6k clocking of 21:34.6.

The UTSA men have captured eight conference titles, starting with five straight in the Trans America Athletic Conference in 1986-90, their first five years of league competition. The Roadrunners also collected three consecutive Southland Conference crowns in 1995-97, with current cross country coach David Hartman claiming the individual title in 1995. Five others have won individual championships, the last by Ryan Taylor in 1997 during Hartman's first tenure as coach.

The UTSA women have won six conference crowns, including the 2013 C-USA Championship in their first year in the league. The Roadrunners also claimed five Southland titles during a six-year stretch from 1991 to 1996. UTSA has earned four individual championships on the women's side, the last by Dana Mecke at the 2008 Southland meet.

The Roadrunners last competed two weeks ago at the Arturo Barrios Invitational in Bryan-College Station, Texas. Colton Stunkard finished 36th overall and 35th among collegiate competitors with a time of 24:38.0 to pace the men to 21st in the team standings. Abby Balli was the top finisher for a partial women's squad, touring the 6k loop in a time of 22.33.2 to place 106th overall and 105th out of collegians.
