Carreon leads Roadrunners on day one of Paradise Invitational

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Camryn Carreon is in the top 15 individuals and the UTSA women's golf team is in ninth place after day one of the Paradise Invitational, which teed off Monday at Osprey Point Golf Club (par 72/6,404 yards).
 
Carreon has a share of 15th after carding a 1-under-par 143 through the first 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament. The senior from San Antonio opened with a 71 that featured four birdies, two on each side. She then posted a 72 in the afternoon on the strength of two more birdies to put her only three shots out of the top 10.
 
The Roadrunners turned in rounds of 296 and 290 to put them in ninth place at 10-over 586 with 18 holes left to play. UTSA is two strokes in front of Georgia Southern and three better than Colorado State, and also ahead of Big Ten teams Wisconsin and Indiana. The Roadrunners are five shots behind a tie for seventh between BYU and Kennesaw State in the 14-team field.
 
Morgan Ellison and Olivia Williams are part of a seven-way tie for 33rd place after registering 3-over 147s. Ellison, a sophomore from Georgia, opened with a 74 and then carded a 73 that was highlighted by back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1-2. Williams, a freshman from England, recorded a 73 behind three birdies in the morning and then finished with a 74.
 
Daniela Abonce and Hunter Nugent are tied for 59th at 7-over 151. Abonce, a freshman from Mexico, bounced back from a 78 with a 73 on the strength of three birdies in the second round. Nugent, a senior from Canada, rebounded from an opening 79 with an even-par 72 that featured three birdies.
 
No. 19 Vanderbilt has the team lead at 22-under followed by No. 47 Nebraska (-10) and USF (-9) in the top three. 
 
The final round is slated for Tuesday.
