UTSA takes hard-fought victory over Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The UTSA women's tennis battled to the very last set with the College of Charleston, coming out victorious by 4-3 over the Cougars on Saturday afternoon at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point. 
 
The Roadrunners fell to 1-0 early as the Cougars earned the doubles point. Fatima Gutierrez and Alexandra Weir were the only ones to win their doubles court, defeating Ella Faessler and Nicole Stephens by 6-3 at the No. 2 doubles spot. 
 
Aleksandra Zlatarova and Magda Tuells fell by 6-3 to Charleston's Slade Coetzee and Halli Trinkle at the top spot. Stanislava Bobrovnikova and Adeliya Mukhutdinova battled through a tiebreaker at the No. 3 spot, but fell to the Cougars' No. 3 duo of Maja Jekauc/Klara Vukicevic by 7-6 (5). 
 
The Roadrunners quickly won those points back and took a 2-1 lead by winning the third and first singles spots back to back. Weir defeated Jekauc at the No. 3 spot by set scores of 6-4 and 6-1, before Zlatarova took the victory over Coetzee at the top spot by 6-3, 6-2. 
 
From here, the score went back and forth between UTSA and Charleston. The Cougars tied it up at 2-2 as Trinkle defeated Gutierrez by 6-2, 6-1 at the second court. 
 
Bobrovnikova then regained the 3-2 lead for UTSA by overcoming Peyton Brotzman by set scores of 7-5 and 6-3 at the sixth court. The Cougars once again tied it up at 3-3 as Mukhutdinova fell to Stephens at the No. 5 spot in three sets by 6-1, 6-7, and 3-6. 
 
Coming down to the final court still playing at the No. 4 spot, Tuells went to battle against Faessler and it went to three hard-fought sets. After falling in the first set by 7-6, Tuells won the second set by 6-4 to force a third set. Tuells then finished the job by winning the third set by 7-5 to lead UTSA to a resilient 4-3 battle over Charleston on Saturday afternoon. 
 
UTSA's record improves to 11-7 overall, while College of Charleston's record falls to 12-5.
