Abonce paces Roadrunners on second day of Chattanooga Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Daniela Abonce posted an even-par scorecard to lead the UTSA women's golf team on the second day of the Chattanooga Classic on Monday at Council Fire Golf Club (par 72/6,209 yards).
 
Abonce's 72 helped her move into the top 20 individuals, while Camryn Carreon and Morgan Ellison each fired a 73 to help guide the Roadrunners to a 297 team score for the second round. 
 
UTSA moved up one spot in the team standings into sole possession of 13th place with a 609, three shots ahead of a tie for 14th between Chattanooga and Middle Tennessee and only six strokes out of the top 10.
 
Abonce recorded a trio of birdies en route to a 1-under 35 on the front nine before adding another birdie on the 373-yard, par-4 15th hole as part of a 37 on the back. The freshman from Mexico climbed 16 places into a tie for 20th at 4-over 148, as she opened the 54-hole event with a 74 on Sunday.
 
Meanwhile, Carreon leads all Roadrunners in the individual standings, as the senior from San Antonio has a share of 15th at 2-over 146. The all-conference performer has posted back-to-back 73s and tallied a team-high 27 pars, the second-best total in the field.
 
Ellison bounced back from an 82 on Sunday with her 1-over scorecard today. The sophomore from Georgia wrote down birdies on the 350-yard, par-4 first and the 509-yard, par-5 13th holes in moving into a tie for 63rd (155).
 
Hunter Nugent (81-80—161) and Olivia Williams (82-79—161) round out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 78th.
 
No. 29 SMU sits atop the team leaderboard at 3-under 573, followed by August (+8), Xavier (+10), Minnesota (+11) and Notre Dame (+13) in the top five.
 
Xavier's Emma McMyler leads the individual race at 8-under 136 (69-67).
 
The final round is slated for an 8 a.m. CT shotgun start on Tuesday.
