Carreon cards 74 on opening day of NCAA Championships

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Making her second straight NCAA Championships appearance, UTSA senior Camryn Carreon carded a 2-over-par 74 in the first round on Friday at Grayhawk Golf Club (par 72/6,384 yards)

Carreon registered a pair of birdies to highlight her opening 18 holes and the senior from San Antonio is tied for 66th in the field of more than 150 of the nation's best collegiate golfers.

Teeing off from No. 1, Carreon recorded a par on the 380-yard, par-4 first hole before settling for a bogey on the second. She then wrote down par on three of the next four holes to precede a birdie on the 474-yard, par-5 seventh. The San Antonio Regional individual champion closed the front with a par and bogey, going out at 2-over 38.

Carreon had a par on No. 10 and then birdied the 539-yard, par-5 11th hole before reeling off five consecutive pars to remain at 1-over. She bounced back from a bogey on No. 17 with a par on her closing her, the 495-yard, par-5 18th.

The individual leaderboard is packed through only one of the first three rounds before the cut. Carreon is just two shots out of a tie for 36th that included top-ranked Rose Zhang of Stanford and only four strokes out of the top 10.

Carreon will tee off on round two from No. 10 at 3:42 p.m. CT Saturday. The top 15 teams along with the top nine individuals not on an advancing team will play one additional round of stroke play on Monday to determine the top eight teams for match play competition and the 72-hole stroke play individual champion.
