SAN ANTONIO- The UTSA women's basketball team led wire-to-wire across a 69-51 victory over Wichita State in American Athletic Conference action at the Convocation Center. The 'Runners are now 5-0 in league play, matching the 1983-84 squad for the program's best-ever start to conference action. Additionally, UTSA extended their winning streak to seven and have now won their last 10 games at The Convo for the second-longest home winning streak in school history.
The Roadrunners (14-2, 5-0 The American) topped the Shockers (7-11, 1-3 The American), as sophomore Idara Udo turned in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while redshirt senior Jordyn Jenkins logged 21 points for her third-straight game with over 20-points scored. Graduate student Nina De Leon Negron and junior Cheyenne Rowe joined the pair in the double-digit scoring club, with De Leon Negron managing 11 points and four assists. Rowe scored 10 and tallied seven rebounds. UTSA shot 50% from the field to the Shockers 37%, recorded 22 more rebounds and saw 26 more points in the paint.
De Leon Negron opened up the first with a triple and back-to-back jumpers for Udo shortly after, saw a 7-2 UTSA lead. The squads exchanged blows ahead of a 10-0 run that saw Jenkins, Rowe, Udo, junior Sidney Love and sophomore Aysia Proctor all score. The Shockers halted the surge, and UTSA carried a 20-8 lead into the subsequent stanza.
It was more of the same in the second, as WSU sunk just three shots, and UTSA closed off the half with an 8-0 spurt for a 34-16 edge.
The Shockers came racing back in the third with multiple three-pointers sparking an 11-0 rally that saw a 40-29 score line. The battle raged on before a WSU layup sent the game into the fourth with UTSA still up, 46-37.
The 'Runners scored the first 15 of the final frame in a streak that featured multiple treys by De Leon Negron and nine points from Jenkins. UTSA then cruised to a 69-51 victory.
The Roadrunners will now hit the road with a contest against Memphis awaiting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in the Elma Roane Fieldhouse.
