SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women's basketball team will look to keep the momentum going on Saturday as they roll into Birmingham, Alabama, with a 1 p.m. American Athletic Conference contest awaiting against UAB at Bartow Arena.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with Curt Bloom (play-by-play) and Mo Finley (analyst) on the call. Neal Raphael will deliver all the action on the radio in the greater San Antonio area on The Bull 93.3 FM and worldwide on the iHeartRadio app.
The Roadrunners (15-2, 6-0 The American) and Blazers (12-6, 3-3 The American) previously met on Jan. 1 in San Antonio, as UTSA picked up a 67-56 win, thanks to 19 points and seven assists by junior Sidney Love. Redshirt senior Jordyn Jenkins also performed well with 16 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks, while freshman Damara Allen scored 11.
UTSA is fresh off a 70-68 comeback victory over Memphis that saw the squad erase an 11-point deficit with 3:44 remaining in the fourth quarter. Jenkins led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore Idara Udo recorded a double-double as well to the tune of 12 points and 10 boards. Also getting on the action, Allen and sophomore Aysia Proctor each scored 11, and graduate student Nina De Leon Negron 10.
UAB comes in riding a three-game winning streak, with victories over Memphis (73-56), Florida Atlantic (73-61), and South Florida, 62-61. They lead The American in assists/turnover ratio at 0.98, and 15.6 assists per game top the league. The Blazers boast an incredibly efficient 44.2 field goal percentage and excel at shooting the three, with an average of 9.1 makes per game 18th in the NCAA.
Jade Weathersby has played a major role in their success, with six double-doubles, sitting second in the conference. She also paces the league in rebounds with 159 on the season and 6.9 per game. Maddie Walsh is the team-leading scorer at 13.3 PPG, and Journey Armstead is not far behind, working 11.2 PPG. Armstead has dished out a squad-high 84 assists, and Walsh in blocks, swatting 22 shots.
