TAMPA—On Wednesday, the UTSA women's basketball team suffered a 75-63 defeat at the hands of South Florida in American Athletic Conference action at the Yuengling Center.
The Roadrunners (17-3, 8-1 The American) fell to the Bulls (14-8, 7-2 The American) for their first loss in conference play. Additionally, the defeat snapped a 10-game UTSA winning streak that was the longest since the 2007-08 campaign.
Junior Cheyenne Rowe posted a team-high 15 points and four rebounds, while classmate Sidney Love charted 14 with four assists. Graduate student Nina De Leon Negron scored nine to go with six boards and three helpers.
Neither team could gain an inch early, as they battled to an 8-8 tie midway through the first. From there, Love hit a jumper, and sophomore Aysia Proctor nailed a triple to hand UTSA a 13-8 advantage. USF immediately responded with a 10-2 run that put them up 18-15 heading into the second.
The subsequent stanza saw a De Leon Negron three-pointer and a pair of freshman Taylor Ross free throws trim the Roadrunner deficit to two, but a 6-2 surge followed, growing a 28-22 edge for the Bulls. Rowe halted the streak with a trey, sending the squads into the locker room with USF leading, 28-25.
The battle raged on as makes for Love and Proctor midway through the period worked a 37-37 tie. The Bulls sunk back-to-back jumpers, and the squads traded triples for a 44-40 score line, ahead of a 52-45 USF advantage entering the fourth.
The Bulls grew a 67-58 lead in the final frame on multiple spurts and never looked back en route to a 75-63 victory.
The Roadrunners will return to the Convocation Center with a 2 p.m. Rowdy Rodeo tipoff on Saturday against Temple.
