A five-run eighth propels UTSA to a 7-4 victory

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA completes the series sweep defeating Texas Southern 7-4 on Sunday, Mar. 9 at Roadrunner Field in San Antonio, Texas. The Roadrunners improve to 15-3 on the season.

After two scoreless innings, the Roadrunners managed to take the lead in the third inning as Drew Detlefsen reached on a fielder’s choice, making way for Norris McClure to score as he hit a triple to start the inning.

In the top of the fifth, Texas Southern notched four runs. They took the lead on a two RBI double, then extended the lead on an RBI double. For the fourth run they hit a single to right field.

The Roadrunners kept fighting as Nathan Hodge grounded out to the second baseman, allowing Diego Diaz, a pinch runner, to score.

To start the eighth inning, Diaz singled on a bunt. A double hit by Caden Miller advanced Diaz to third. N. Hodge got his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly that scored Diaz. With Jordan Ballin at the plate, Miller stole third and managed to come home as the catcher threw the ball away, tying the ballgame 4-4.

Ballin was walked on the Miller score, he then stole second before Andrew Stucky was walked. McClure grounded out to the first baseman, allowing both Stucky and Ballin to advance into scoring position.

With runners on second and third, Mason Lytle was intentionally walked bringing up Detlefsen with the bases loaded. Detlefsen singled to the right fielder who then booted the ball allowing all three runners to score giving UTSA a 7-4 lead.

Robert Orloski came into the game in the top of the fifth with one out and pitched for the rest of the game, not allowing a single run. In his 4.2 innings of work, Orloski only gave up one hit and recorded six strikeouts.

- UTSA set a new season high with six stolen bases.
- The UTSA pitching staff has not allowed a run scored in the eighth inning of any game.
- The Roadrunners remain undefeated at home with 13 wins.
- UTSA has improved its program record by setting a win streak of 14 games.
- Detlefsen went 2-for-5 with three RBIs for his eighth multi-hit game of the season and eighth multi-RBI game of the season.
- N. Hodge recorded two RBIs, his third time recording multiple RBIs in a game.
- Miller had two hits for his fourth multi-hit of the season.
