Dulany’s 71 highlights day two of The Hayt

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. — Kaelen Dulany carded a 1-under-par 71 to highlight UTSA’s second-round action at The Hayt on Sunday at Sawgrass Country Club (par 72/7,092 yards).

Dulany wrote down three birdies during his Sunday round to pace the Roadrunners, who registered a 1-over 289 that also counted a pair of even-par scorecards from Logan Vargas and Jack Wehman and a 74 by Logan Zurn. UTSA posted an 18-shot improvement from its opening round and is in 14th place at 20-over 596, 12 shots ahead of Navy and only six strokes behind No. 26 Northwestern (+10) in the team standings that include 10 nationally ranked squads.

Starting on No. 16, Dulany posted par on seven of his first eight hole before recording a birdie on the 192-yard, par-3 sixth. He then birdied the 544-yard, par-5 eighth and the 407-yard, par-4 10th before settling for just his second bogey of the day on the 11th and then closing with four more pars. His 71 propelled the sophomore from Keller, Texas, into a tie for 64h at 6-over 150 with 18 holes left to play on Monday.

Vargas logged four birdies en route to his 72, the third par-or-better round of his debut campaign with the Roadrunners. The junior from Lubbock had a four on the 525-yard 18th and a three on the 412-yard second to get to 2-under for the day. He then bounced back from a pair of bogeys with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7-8 but moved back to even for the round with two bogeys over his final six holes. He is tied for 70th at 7-over 151.

Wehman also has a share of 70th after registering a 72 that was headlined by back-to-back birdies on the 433-yard, par-4 17th and the 525-yard, par-5 18th holes. The Austin native added his third birdie of the day with a three on the 423-yard seventh en route to his third par-or-better score in his last five rounds.

Logan Zurn leads the lineup through 36 holes with a 5-over 149, good for a share of 59th. The junior from Grapevine, Texas, followed Saturday’s 75 with a 74 today that featured a team-high six birdies. He leads UTSA with eight birdies for the event

Walker Franklin is in 64th along with Dulany at 6-over par after posting a 76 on Sunday that was highlighted by back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7-8.

No. 18 Alabama has the 36-hole lead at 22-under par, followed by No. 9 Virginia (-15), No. 28 Duke (-13), No. 4 Texas (-12) and No, 8 North Carolina (-7) in the top five.

David Ford of North Carolina is the individual leader at 10-under 134 (69-65).

The final round is set for Monday.
