Five run fourth propels ‘Runners past Panthers, 7-1

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA softball team picked up a 7-1 victory over Prairie View A&M on Tuesday in nonconference action at the Lady Panther Softball Field.

The Roadrunners (15-19, 2-10 The American) bested the Panthers (16-14, 10-1 SWAC), as freshman Reagan Stoudt (1-6) picked up the first collegiate win of her career, and Brielle Moreno (6-4) got tagged with the loss.

Along with Stoudt, classmate Ava Eldridge, sophomore Meredith Schmitt, junior Katia Reyes, and freshman Kaylie Olivarez, all pitched in to toss a one-hitter, with the squad piling up 10 strikeouts, four of which were by Reyes.

Freshman Sabrina Wick and newcomer Skylar Rucker each posted a pair of RBIs, while sophomore Kalee Rochinski, Reyes, and senior Camryn Robillard all drove in runs.

UTSA snagged an early lead as Wick walked, and Rucker singled to put a pair on base. Reyes then sliced a base knock into right center, allowing Wick to dent the plate and deliver a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. PVAMU, however, pushed across a run to tie the contest in the home half.

In the second, Robillard laced a double into left, scoring junior Madison Hornback, who reached on a single into left, allowing the ‘Runners to regain a 2-1 edge.

The ‘Runners were red-hot in the fourth, as Moreno, Hornback, and Robillard all reached safely to kick-start the inning. From there, Wick drove in a pair on a sharply hit single, and Rucker knocked in two more to increase the UTSA total. Rochinski then drilled one down the right field line, scoring Rucker and issuing a 7-1 score line.

The pitching staff then kept the Panthers off the board for the remainder of the contest, securing the victory.

UTSA will remain on the road, facing North Texas across three American Athletic Conference games over the weekend.
