Former Wagner star Nunez signs with the Roadrunners for 2025-26

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA men’s basketball coach Austin Claunch announced on Thursday the first post-season transfer addition to his second recruiting class with the Roadrunners. Leading off the spring signings with a local flair, former Wagner High School guard Austin Nunez will join the Roadrunners for Claunch’s second season in San Antonio.

“What better way to build on the foundation we’ve started than to have the opportunity to welcome Austin back home to represent the 210,” Claunch said. “He’s an outstanding player who’s bought into elevating UTSA basketball and we couldn’t be more excited to bring him home and get to work with him.”

With the 6-foot-2, 175-pound left-handed guard joining UTSA from his second stint at Arizona State, Nunez is the son of eight-time All-American and UTSA Hall of Famer Tameka Roberts-Nunez. An injury forced him to redshirt in 2024-24 with the Sun Devils after only four games. Nunez started his career at Arizona State in 2022-23 out of San Antonio’s Wagner High School rated a consensus four-star prospect by Rivals, 247Sports and ESPN, playing his sophomore season at Ole Miss. He's played in 62 games, shooting 39.3 percent from the field, 38 percent from three and 78.6 percent at the line. In his rookie season at ASU, he averaged 4.5 ppg in 16.3 mpg, shooting 41.5 percent from the field and a team-best 37.7 percent from the arc, collecting 24 assists and 19 steals in 28 games.

Coming out of high school, Rivals ranked Nunez as the No. 57 recruit in the nation and the 11th-best point guard. A McDonald’s All-American nominee his senior year, Nunez averaged 28.5 ppg and eclipsed 1,500 career points, along with 6.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists as a senior. He was named TABC Class 6A All-State, First Team District 27-6A and was the San Antonio Express News’ Alamo High School Sports Player of the Year as a senior in 2022. He played club basketball for Southern Assault.
