SAN ANTONIO – On Thursday, head coach Karen Aston announced the addition of UTSA women’s basketball alumnus Amber Gregg to the 2025-26 coaching staff.
“Welcome home, Amber!” said Aston. “It has always been a goal of mine to bring back successful people in our profession who are part of the Roadrunner Family. To be able to add an assistant coach with a legacy here at UTSA is so incredibly exciting. Ambers’ passion for the game of basketball oozes out of her, and her desire to help young players reach their potential on and off the court is inspiring. Amber is a winner and has experienced championships here at UTSA. She is so proud to wear orange and blue … I look forward to working with her, and helping our program continue to grow.”
No stranger to San Antonio, Gregg will serve as an assistant coach in the Convocation Center after starring in it as a player from 2007-11. She led the ‘Runners to a Southland Conference regular-season title in 2008-09, as well as back-to-back SLC Tournament Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances in 2007-08 and 2008-09. She was the 11th player in program history to surpass 1,000 points, charting 1,143, which sits 12th on the all-time leader board, while 200 three-pointers made and an 82.2% clip from the free-throw line are each program records. She is fourth in games played (118) and eighth in games started (86) at UTSA. Gregg also holds the single-game record for free throws made with 17 against Texas State on Feb. 26, 2011, a figure that also serves as a Southland Conference record, and 32 points against Jackson State on Nov. 28, 2009, rank 10th. Additionally, she was an all-conference selection in 2010-11 after posting a team-high 13.7 points per game to go with 3.2 assists per game.
On the hire, ESPN Women’s Hoops Recruiting Analyst Shane Laflin stated, “I’ve known Amber for over 15 years, and since I first met her it was evident that she loved the game of basketball. She was a gritty, skilled, and competitive player – and she brings that energy to her player development. We have always stayed in touch and talked the game. She will be a fantastic asset to the UTSA staff as an alum and someone who did a lot of winning in her career there.”
After graduating from UTSA, Gregg spent five seasons as the Director of Player Development for the Austin Elite Basketball Program, serving as the head coach for the Austin Elite Boys 17U team from 2013-15 and as an assistant for the Girls 17U team from 2011-13. From there, she spent six seasons (2015-21) at Louisiana, primarily working with the guards and overseeing nine All-Sun Belt selections and the 2018-19 Freshman of the Year selection, Brandi Williams.
Gregg then founded 94FT Player Development out of Lafayette, Louisiana, where she trained athletes from the youth to professional level, offering tailored individual skill development, with special emphasis on basketball IQ and mental performance.
“I’m beyond excited and truly honored to return to my alma mater in this new role,” said Gregg. “UTSA has always held a special place in my heart – it’s where I grew as a player, a person, and a leader. To now have the opportunity to give back to the program that gave me so much is a full-circle moment. I can’t wait to pour into these student-athletes, help them grow both on and off the court, and be part of continuing the legacy of Roadrunner basketball. To the fans – your passion, support, and pride in this program meant everything to me as a player. I can’t wait to feel that energy again, this time from the sideline. Let’s get to work!”
