Menin advances to NCAA West 400m hurdles quarterfinal

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The UTSA men’s track & field team saw one athlete advance to the next round on Wednesday night at E.B. Cushing Stadium in the NCAA First Round, as senior Hugo Menin topped his hurdles heat to move on to Friday’s quarters.

Leading the three men’s Roadrunners in competition on Wednesday’s opening day at Cushing Stadium, Menin broke out to a lead down the final 150 meters and coasted to a 50.10 clocking to easily win the second heat of the 400-meter hurdles despite swirling winds. An automatic qualifier for Friday’s 7:25 p.m. quarterfinal, his time went down as No. 10 after all heats completed, sitting .33 seconds off the Cysoing, France-native’s career-best 49.77 at the 65th Mt. SAC Relays in mid-April.

Opening competition for the Roadrunners on Wednesday, Bath, England freshman Charlie Staddon finished fifth in the second heat of the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 38th overall at 14.15 in his first career regional appearance. Later in the evening, St. Thomas, Ontario senior Mike Roth went 47.07 in the fifth heat of the 400-meter, ranking 42nd in the overall standings.

Thursday’s action is scheduled with only the women’s events, with eight Roadrunners in individual competition. The long jump is set for 4:30 p.m. and features Ida Breigan, Rachela Pace, Oreoluwa Adamson and Brina Likar. The shot put follows at 6 p.m. for Nyaluet Diew, ahead of the 400-meter with Fatoumata Kabo at 7:25 p.m., 400-meter hurdles with Selma Ims at 8:20 p.m. and the 200-meter with Kiah Dubarry-Gay at 8:45 p.m.
