IRVING, Texas — UTSA redshirt junior Owen McCown has been named the American Conference Offensive Player of the Week following his record-setting performance in the win over Tulane last Thursday night, the league office announced Monday.
McCown broke a pair of school records in a near-perfect passing performance to help lead the Roadrunners to a 48-26 triumph over the Green Wave. The Rusk, Texas, native completed his first 16 passes — a school record — en route to going 31 of 33 for a program-best .939 completion percentage, passing for 370 yards and four touchdowns. He threw a pair of TD passes to David Amador II and one apiece to Will Henderson III and Devin McCuin, as the Roadrunners racked up a season-high 523 yards of offense while handing Tulane its first league loss of the season.
His .939 completion percentage is the best by an FBS player this season who has completed at least 20 passes in a game, while his 370-yard output gives him five 300-yard games at UTSA. McCown, who also made this week’s Davey O’Brien Great 8 list, has completed 168 of 249 passes (.675) for 1,680 yards and 17 touchdowns this year.
Amador was named one of the American’s honorable mention players of the week. The redshirt sophomore caught 10 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns, and he also completed a 21-yard TD pass to McCuin.
The Roadrunners (4-4, 2-2) will travel to Tampa to face South Florida (6-2, 3-1) on Thursday, Nov. 6. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT at Raymond James Stadium and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
