About the UTSA Roadrunners
Opening up the second year under head coach Austin Claunch, Roadrunner fans will be getting familiar with some new faces, as UTSA’s offseason saw 11 new players enter the program. Returning from last season are graduate student center Mo Njie, sophomore forward/guard Baboucarr Njie, redshirt senior guard LJ Brown and redshirt sophomore forward Jackson Fazande. Transfers who joined the Roadrunners in the offseason are guard Vasean Allette from TCU who was named to the American’s Preseason All-Conference Second Team, forward/guard Macaleab Rich from Kansas State, former Wagner High star guard Austin Nunez from Arizona State, guard Jamir Simpson from Southern Utah, forward Daniel Akitoby from Morgan State and Stanley Borden from Duke. A familiar face to the program, 2024-25 graduate assistant Pierce Spencer learned his playing clock wasn’t up and will join the Roadrunners for his final playing season – adding on to his career as a standout guard for Claunch at Nicholls. The Roadrunners have three outstanding freshmen joining the squad in Dorian Hayes (Houston), Kaidon Rayfield (Oklahoma City) and Mathéo Coffi (Strasbourg, France).

It's easy to expect the Roadrunners will play fast after being one of the most uptempo NCAA teams last year and throughout Claunch’s coaching career. The 2024-25 Roadrunners ranked ninth nationally in fast break scoring at 15.1 ppg. Look for UTSA to lean more on defensive pressure as an offseason focus, though the Roadrunners already ranked ninth nationally in steals (9.5) and 14th (15.2) in turnovers forced. UTSA will also let it fly from range, topping the American and finishing 25th nationally a year ago 9.9 three-pointers per game. The Roadrunners were also deadly at the line with an NCAA seventh-best 79.2 free throw percentage.

About the CBS Ambassadors
Playing under University of Houston legend Michael Young, coaching his first season at the Collegiate level. An NCCAA team, the Ambassadors are already six games deep, rounding out three consecutive dates with NCAA Division I teams – having suffered exhibition losses against Prairie View A&M (95-48) on Monday and Rice (109-38) on Tuesday. At 1-3 against NAIA and NCCAA teams, CBS has been led by sophomore point guard Omani Ozenne at 17.7 ppg and freshman guard Trayvon Martinez at 12.3 ppg. Leading CBS on the boards in those games with a near-double-double average, freshman forward Alvin Kay has grabbed 11.3 rpg with 9.5 ppg scoring. Martinez put up 16 points against Rice on 7-of-17 shooting on Tuesday night in Houston.

These teams are meeting for the first time and this is the third season of basketball for the Ambassadors.

Up Next
The Roadrunners will go from the opener to a big non-conference test, as SIU Edwardsville comes to the Convocation Center for a 12:30 p.m. day game on Friday, Nov. 7. The Cougars went 21-12 last season, winning the Ohio Valley Conference and reaching the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance against No. 1 Houston.
