Diew paces initial competitors at Ted Nelson Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Competition kicked off at the Ted Nelson Invitational on Friday afternoon at R.A. "Murray" Fasken '38 Indoor Track, with the weight throw events marking the first events of the new semester of indoor track for the UTSA track & field teams. Junior Nyaluet Diew led all competitors as the lone women’s performer, while sophomore Waylon McKenzie topped the UTSA men.

Diew secured her best mark on her opening attempt of the women’s weight throw, hitting a measurement of 16.25m (53-3.75) that would award her fourth place in the field.

Opening the day’s competition, McKenzie advanced to the final round of the men’s weight throw and landed a 17.56 (57-7.5) toss on his second final throw, setting him in eighth place with a career-best measurement. Teammates Aiden Mercado (14.92m/48-11.5) and Ryan Stillman (14.74m/48-4.5) followed in 12th and 13th, respectively.

Competition resumes on Saturday, beginning with 10 a.m. field events – starting on shot put, triple and long jump, then closing up with high jump beginning at 3:30 p.m. The running events will start at 12 p.m. with the 3,000-meter, followed by the 60-meter hurdles, 60-meter, mile, 400-meter, 800-meter, 200-meter, distance medley relay and 4x400-meter relay – the final event set for 5:35 p.m.
