Sinclair announced as UTSA soccer assistant coach

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA eighth-year head soccer coach Derek Pittman announced on Tuesday that the Roadrunners have hired Scott Sinclair as their new assistant coach. Sinclair arrives in San Antonio to join the Roadrunners for spring practices, helping UTSA prepare to defend its American Conference Championship.

“Scott Sinclair is a tremendous addition to our staff and a great fit for our program,” Pittman said. “He understands what it takes to recruit and compete for championships and shares our vision for developing elite players within a strong, values-driven culture. His experience, energy and commitment to growth will continue to push UTSA soccer to be a consistent championship contender each and every year in the American.”

Sinclair joins the Roadrunners from Arkansas State, where he served three seasons as associate head coach for the Red Wolves. Through his focus on training and player development, he helped boost A-State goals scored by 41 percent and cut goals conceded by 28 percent, leaning on 10 years of coaching experience.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to join UTSA and thankful to Derek for his trust and belief in me,” Sinclair said. “The program he has built is special, and I’m excited to contribute to the continued success of the Roadrunners. I’m proud to be part of the UTSA soccer family and to work alongside a leader whose vision and ambition align so closely with my own. It’s an honor to join the Roadrunners’ journey.”

Prior to his arrival in Jonesboro, Sinclair spent two seasons as an assistant coach at George Mason. Additionally, he coached at the ECNL level with the Virginia Development Academy, serving as the head coach for the 04/05 Girls, and assistant coach for the 06 Girls teams. Under his guidance, his players earned ECNL National Camp Best XI, ECNL Conference Player of the Year, ECNL All-American, and U.S. Youth National Team selections.

Sinclair was also previously head women’s soccer coach at Union University (2018-21) after serving as an assistant coach (2014-18) and a volunteer coach (2011-14) for the Union men's soccer program. In addition to his on-field coaching duties at Union, Sinclair served as the head strength & conditioning coach for the soccer, softball and volleyball programs (2011-18). He was also heavily involved with youth development, serving as one of the lead coaches with the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program Region III Girls and Tennessee State Soccer Association.

The Scotland native led Union to winning several accolades both on and off the field. As head coach, he consistently had 90 percent of his student-athletes on Dean's List, maintaining a team GPA above 3.5 each year. During the 2020-21 academic year, his team registered the highest GPA in the department with a 3.71 average. Other academic accolades include having over 100 athletes on the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Academic Honor Roll, multiple GSC All-Academic Team awards, and multiple United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards.

Athletic awards include having multiple first team and second team All-Gulf South honors, numerous GSC Player of the Week awards, two GSC Freshman of the Year awardees and the United Soccer Coaches Platinum Level Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award for the 2020-21 season.

In addition to his coaching history, Sinclair boasts a spectacular playing resume at the semi-professional and professional level. In his semi-professional career, Sinclair played for Workshop Town FC and Mexborough FC in England both for a year each. Sinclair also played for Sauchie Juniors FC as a part of the East Junior Football League in Scotland for a year. Professionally, Sinclair had a distinguished career with two Scottish premier teams, spending six years at Stirling Albion F.C. and two years at Alloa A.F.C.

Sinclair had a decorated college career at Union from 2004-08, including being named a standout defensive player. Sinclair graduated with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine and exercise science from Union University in 2009 before earning a master's degree in education and sport leadership in 2017.

Sinclair holds a Youth Coaching License, and UEFA B license with the Scottish Football Association, National Coaching C License with the United States Soccer Federation and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Sinclair replaces Rob McGann, who served two years in the same role and as recruiting coordinator and recently joined the staff at Auburn as an assistant coach.

“I am extremely grateful for all that Rob McGann did for our program over the last two years,” Pittman said. “We have a track record of hiring top-quality coaches within UTSA soccer and he was no exception. We wish him nothing but the best in his opportunity in the SEC.”
