Williams, Breigan, Lien highlight UTSA’s Don Kirby opening day

ALBUQUERQUE — Competition opened on Friday at the Indoor Track at the Albuquerque Convention Center, kicking off the first day of the Don Kirby Elite Invitational and UTSA track & field’s final regular season indoor meet. The first-day Roadrunners delivered a trio of medals in jump events as Jayden Williams, Mia Lien and Ida Breigan logged top-3 finishes.

Making a big splash, Williams, a junior transfer from North Dakota State, landed a career-best-matching 7.65m (25-1.25) leap in the men’s long jump, earning his first UTSA event victory while moving into a tie for the third-best UTSA all-time indoor long jump and registering the second-longest measurement in the American this season. Also in the long jump, junior Jemuel Miller logged his best measurement since the 2023 season, reaching 7.49m (24-7) to finish in seventh place.

Junior All-American Breigan recorded a season best in the women’s long jump, hitting 6.41m (21-0.5) on her first attempt that secured the silver medal and extended her lead atop the American Conference standings in the event.

Also collecting silver, sophomore All-American Lien reached 1.79m (5-10.5) in the women’s high jump with her second-highest height of the season. Finishing in sixth in the event, junior Edlin Laur crested 1.71m (5-7.25).

Also competing early on the first day, junior Nyaluet Diew recorded a women’s weight throw measurement of 17.46m (57-3.5) to reach eighth place.

Returning to competition on Saturday at Don Kirby, field events lead off again at 10:30 a.m. CT on the shot put, followed by triple jump. Running events open at 11 a.m. CT with the 60-meter hurdles, followed by the 60-meter, mile, 800-meter and the meet will close at approximately 4:30 p.m. CT on the 4x400-meter relays.
