SAN ANTONIO – Freshman Arlette Hernandez tossed her eighth complete game of the campaign, while freshman Brookelynn Meador and senior Madison Hornback each launched home runs as the UTSA softball team took down North Texas at Roadrunner Field, 5-2. The win propelled the squad to a program record 7-0 start to American Conference play, surpassing the 2006 squad that went 6-0 before falling in the Southland.
The Roadrunners (18-13, 7-0 American) bested the Mean Green (16-14, 6-1), as Hernandez (11-4) picked up the win, fanning six and scattering two runs across the contest. Britney Lewinski (9-7) was tagged with the loss for UNT. Junior Samantha Mundine joined Meador and Hornback in logging an RBI on the afternoon.
Redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid, junior Taryn Madlock and Meador all singled to open the bottom of the third. Mundine stepped up and laced a base knock into right center, plating Madrid, and two more came across on an error later in the inning. Meador then launched a home run in the third to go up, 4-0.
UNT got one back in the fourth, reflecting, and another run in the top of the sixth had them within one. Hornback went yard in the home half, for a 5-2 advantage that the Mean Green were unable to recover from.
The ‘Runners will meet UNT again on Saturday, with first pitch set for 1 p.m., ahead of the finale Sunday at noon.
