BOCA RATON, Fla.– The UTSA softball team suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Florida Atlantic on Friday in an American Conference series opener at the FAU Softball Stadium.
The Roadrunners (19-16, 7-2\3 American) fell to the Owls (23-11, 5-5 American), as freshman Arlette Hernandez (11-6) threw a complete game in the loss, while Autumn Courtney (12-5) earned the win for Fla. Atlantic.
Rucker opened the contest with a walk, and a Wick double put a pair in scoring position for UTSA in the top of the first. FAU, however, found a trio of outs to exit the inning unscathed.
The Owls got on the board in the bottom of the second, via a solo home run. Another run came across for FAU in the third on an RBI double, resulting in a two-run edge. A bomb in the bottom of the fourth saw a 3-0 Owl lead, and they added two more on a long ball in the sixth to go up, 5-0. From there, UTSA was unable to spark a comeback, falling in the series opener.
UTSA and Florida Atlantic will battle twice more, with a Saturday doubleheader set for 11 a.m. CT.
