BOCA RATON, Fla.– The UTSA softball team first fell, 8-2 at the hands of Florida Atlantic, before suffering a 9-0 run-rule defeat on Saturday across an American Conference twinbill at the FAU Softball Stadium.
The Roadrunners (19-18, 7-5 American) fell to the Owls (25-11, 7-5 American) in game one, with redshirt sophomore Madison Collins (1-3) getting tagged with the loss while Madison Inscoe (3-0) picked up the win in relief. At the plate, freshman Demiree Stafford drove in both of UTSA’s runs, while junior Samantha Mundine was 2-for-3.
Fla. Atlantic threatened in the first, moving a runner over to third with two outs in the frame. A hard hit ball appeared to be leaving the park before sophomore Skylar Rucker made a sensational home run-robbing catch, allowing UTSA to escape the inning unscathed.
The ‘Runners struck first, plating two runs in the top of the second, as Stafford roped a two-out base knock up through the middle of the infield, plating senior Katia Reyes and Mundine.
FAU replied in the second, with a wild pitch and a sac fly knotting the contest, 2-2. Another run and a grand slam followed in the third, seeing a 7-2 Owl advantage.
A later miscue increased the Fla. Atlantic lead to six in the fifth, and UTSA was unable to recover, falling 8- 2 in game one.
In game two, Autumn Courtney (13-5) earned the win for FAU, and freshman Arlette Hernandez (11-7) picked up the loss, as Mundine, freshman Brookelynn Meador, and redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid all logged hits for UTSA.
The Owls got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second, and an eight-run third saw a 9-0 FAU edge.
The Roadrunners were unable to plate a run from there, falling 9-0 via the run rule.
UTSA will now focus on Texas State, with a midweek Battle for I-35 on the docket for Tuesday at 6 p.m. inside Roadrunner Field.
