Hernandez goes the distance in 3-0 victory over UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Freshman Arlette Hernandez tossed a complete game shutout as UTSA took down UAB, 3-0 in game two, clinching an American Conference series victory on Saturday at Mary Bowers Field.

The Roadrunners (22-25, 10-10 American) beat the Blazers (19-26, 6-5 American) as Hernandez (12-12) scattered five hits for the win, and Caitlin Russel (6-7) was pegged with the loss. The victory was UTSA’s 22nd of the campaign, representing the most since the squad went 36-18 in 2015.

Freshman Brookelynn Meador had a 2-for-4 afternoon with an RBI and a run scored, while junior Taryn Madlock drove in two via an RBI double.

Senior Madison Lenton singled and swiped second before a base knock for sophomore Skylar Rucker and a wild pitch that moved the pair into scoring position. Meador then laced one into center, plating Lenton and Madlock, who doubled, scoring a pair and working a three-run UTSA edge. From there, neither team was able to dent the plate, as Hernandez finished things out for a 3-0 victory.

UAB and UTSA will meet once more, with a series finale set for noon on Sunday at Mary Bowers Field.
