BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The UTSA softball team suffered a 14-6 defeat at the hands of UAB in an American Conference series finale on Sunday at Mary Bowers Field.
The Roadrunners (22-26, 10-11 American) fell to the Blazers (20-26, 7-15 American) as sophomore Reagan Stoudt (5-7) was pegged with the loss and Hannah Cole (2-3) earned the win for UAB. Juniors Taryn Madlock and Samantha Mundine each posted home runs on the day, with Madlock pacing the squad with three RBIs. Mundine finished the afternoon 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while the freshman tandem of Brookelynn Meador and Demiree Stafford also drove in runs.
The Blazers jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first, and UTSA got one back in the second on a Mundine solo shot. UAB launched a grand slam in the second for an 8-1 advantage. Looking to chip away at the deficit, Rucker singled in the third and later came around on a Meador sac fly that saw an 8-2 score line.
A Stafford RBI single knocked in Mundine in the fourth to pull within five, but a Blazer home run in the home half resulted in a 9-3 score.
Base knocks for sophomore Sabrina Wick and redshirt sophomore Makayla Madrid kick-started the fifth, prompting a Madlock bomb that trimmed the deficit to three, but UAB again answered with a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame for an 11-6 edge. The Blazers then plated three more in the sixth, halting the contest early and securing the 14-6 victory.
The ‘Runners will now host Charlotte for a three-game American Conference series beginning Friday at 6 p.m. inside Roadrunner Field.
