WALNUT, Calif. – The UTSA track & field teams continued their late-season rise by extending Friday’s momentum into the final day of action at Hilmer Lodge Stadium to wrap up the 66th Annual Mt. SAC Relays on Saturday. Adding to the weekend’s medal cache, both Lauralyn Clifford and Ida Breigan came away as event winners, while Jemuel Miller snapped a UTSA record. Saturday’s results bring UTSA’s event-winner total to four at the historic elite competition.
Opening up Saturday’s competition, Toronto, Ontario senior transfer Lauralyn Clifford maintained her standard atop the American Conference hammer throw rankings, landing a 58.31m (191-3) toss on her first attempt of the collegiate finals, running away with the gold by 0.66m – registering her first event victory of the season. Also in the hammer, junior Nyaluet Diew went 45.72m (150-0) for 17th.
Also repping the throws in the elite division, Mission, Texas senior transfer Daisy Monie improved her all-time UTSA position with a new third-best shot put measurement, tossing 16.02m (52-6.75) for fifth place, while Diew went 15.89m (52-1.75) for sixth.
Into the afternoon field events, Fredrikstad, Norway junior Breigan logged another championship-level long jump measurement with her best wind-legal jump of the year, securing the .01m win in the elite division with a 6.42m (21-0.75) measurement on her fourth pass, edging out Arizona’s Sydney Vanek for her second event victory this outdoor season.
Coming down the stretch, Bridgetown, Barbados redshirt junior Miller hit 16.25m (53-3.75) on his third triple jump elite attempt to finish as the second collegiate performer and fourth overall, snapping his own 2024 UTSA record in the process and rising up to seventh in the national standings and is now leading the American by 1.13m.
Coming up big in the 4x400-meter relay elite, the squad of Selma Ims, Fatoumata Kabo, Shadae Findley and Breigan delivered the American’s new top time and the third-best clocking in UTSA history at 3:35.40 for 7th place to wrap up UTSA’s competition at the Relays.
Cutting close to his career-best on the big stage, sophomore Charlie Staddon registered a season-best 13.82 in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in ninth place of the elite division.
Up next: Following a week out of action, the Roadrunners will seal up the regular season with a return to E.B. Cushing Stadium and College Station for Texas A&M’s Alumni Muster, May 1-2. The postseason opens in Denton, Texas, with the American Conference Outdoor Championships to be held at the Mean Green Track & Field Stadium, May 14-16.
