Second straight sweep swells win streak to three

SAN ANTONIO – On Thursday, UTSA Volleyball welcomed Gonzaga to open the three-day 2026 Roadrunner Classic. The hosts hit .300, headlined by 25 total kills from Gigi Mason and Sydney Bryant. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs mustered just 30 kills on a .129 clip, falling to 2-5 on the season. With the victory, the Navy & Orange improved to 4-2, doing so with their third straight triumph.

Set-by-set: UTSA wins 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-21)

FIRST SET

An early 5-1 edge for the visitors was answered by a pair of Sydney Bryant blocks, including a solo rejection. After the Bulldogs pulled ahead 10-8, Isabella Arroyave headed to the service line for what would prove to be UTSA’s longest run of the season. The junior landed four aces during a 10-point stretch, doubling her single-match high and nearly matching her career total entering the contest. Sydney Bryant and Caroline Tredwell each landed two kills to bookend the game-altering rally that left the hosts up 18-10. Gigi Mason found her rhythm with a pair of terminations before Giada Obregon landed an ace of her own to take the frame by a 25-16 margin.

SECOND SET

Another Arroyave ace came after a kill from the Colombian as both sides remained deadlocked at nine points apiece. The redshirt junior landed her sixth and final perfect serve amid a 4-0 run that forced a timeout from the Bulldogs before three different Roadrunners picked up a kill to go ahead 18-12. In similar fashion to the opening frame, Obregon came up with two straight aces as her side’s edge never slipped below six the rest of the way. Back-to-back block assists from Brooke Elliott and Caroline Tredwell capped the shortest stanza of the night at 25-15.

THIRD SET

A trio of early errors from Gonzaga helped the hosts pull ahead 12-10 while Gigi Mason and Sydney Bryant combined for six terminations. A 7-2 visitors’ burst then saw the ‘Runners face their final deficit of the evening at 17-14. Caroline Tredwell followed up with a kill and an ace before another miscue knotted things up at 20-20. Mason poured in another two kills and a block, setting up a match-clinching attack error from the guests at 25-21.

NUMBERS OF NOTE

  • The Roadrunners’ .300 hitting percentage was their second highest in a match this season, only behind last Friday’s mark of .344 against Tarleton State.
  • After holding a single-match low mark of 21 attack errors through four contests, UTSA has combined for just 18 in its past two outings, posting 12 on Thursday.
  • Isabella Arroyave’s six aces were the most by a Roadrunner this season, falling one short of the program record.
  • The junior entered the matchup with five total aces, more than doubling her three-year career total in the first 63 points of Thursday’s bout.
  • For the first time this season, Gigi Mason paced her side in kills, tallying 13 on a remarkable .478 hitting percentage.
  • The redshirt sophomore leads all Roadrunners with a .338 hitting percentage this fall.
  • Ledisi Kpea’s .556 hitting percentage led all student-athletes with at least five attempts on Thursday.
  • For the sixth straight time to open 2026, Valeria Ortiz led the squad in assists, adding seven digs.
  • The Navy & Orange just missed out on their third straight double-digit block outing, totaling nine against the Bulldogs.

On Friday, the fifth-annual Roadrunner Classic rolls on with a trio of matches. After a pair of neutral contests at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., UTSA is slated hit the floor with an anticipated start time of 6:30 p.m. East Texas A&M (5-1) will await across the net as the ‘Runners eye a fourth straight victory.
