Hyper-efficient attack seals perfect Roadrunner Classic

SAN ANTONIO – On Saturday, UTSA Volleyball hosted IU Indy in the 2026 Roadrunner Classic finale from the Convocation Center. The hosts continued their scorching September, solidifying a fifth straight victory while extending their winning streak to 13 straight sets. With the sweep, Carol Price-Torok’s squad improved to 6-2 overall, dropping the Jaguars to 4-6 on the campaign.

Set-by-set: UTSA wins 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-16)

FIRST SET

Sydney Bryant landed two kills and a block before Giada Obregon’s serve found the floor as UTSA blitzed its way to a 12-3 edge early on. Caroline Tredwell logged a kill before her solo block sparked the home defense. Ledisi Kpea then got involved on three separate blocks down the stretch while Bryant tallied another trio of terminations to cruise past the Jaguars 25-14.

SECOND SET

As the ‘Runners stormed out to another solid start at 13-6, Ally Tribe came out of a timeout already boasting four second-set kills and a pair of blocks, including a solo rejection. Makinsey Jones then entered the contest, teaming up with Kpea amid an extended 9-4 spurt that saw Bryant add four more terminations to her ledger. Setter Valeria Ortiz then dialed one up for Tribe, who sealed the second consecutive stanza with a kill at 25-14.

THIRD SET

Bryant, the weekend’s most valuable player, did pour in another kill and solo block, but IU Indy miscues did the heavy lifting en route to an 8-3 edge early on. Alyssa Manitzas followed up with one of UTSA’s three aces on the day before three straight Bryant points swelled the margin to 18-10. Brooke Elliott and Ledisi Kpea teamed up for four kills down the stretch, setting the stage for a Megan Hawkins delivery to Makinsey Jones on a sweep-sealing kill at 25-16.

NUMBERS OF NOTE

  • UTSA improved its winning streak to five straight matches, taking 13 consecutive sets in the process.
  • The ‘Runners last won 13 straight sets in Nov. 2013, capping off their streak by taking the first two frames of the CUSA Championship match against Tulane before prevailing 3-1.
  • The Navy & Orange’s .403 hitting percentage was their highest this fall, besting a previous mark of .344 against Tarleton State eight days prior.
  • For the fourth straight outing, UTSA amassed a hitting percentage of at least .300 in the win.
  • The Roadrunners last hit .300 or higher across four straight matches in November 2016.
  • Redshirt freshman Sydney Bryant led the way for the sixth time this campaign with 15 kills, boasting a remarkable .636 hitting percentage while adding three blocks.
  • For the eighth straight time to open the campaign, Valeria Ortiz paced the squad in assists, tallying 16 in the sweep.
  • Ledisi Kpea finished the afternoon with four kills and six blocks, pacing her squad in rejections and doubling the visitors’ team total.
  • Starting libero Alyssa Manitzas led her side with 13 digs, adding six assists and an ace.
  • Of the seven Roadrunners who recorded at least three attacks, six posted hitting percentages of at least .250 against IU Indy.
  • After posting an .833 clip on Friday, Caroline Tredwell followed up with five kills and as many blocks on a .556 hitting percentage versus the Jaguars.
  • Graduate Brooke Elliott finished the afternoon with three efficient kills (.429) against the squad from her hometown, rounding out her performance with two blocks and as many digs.

Next week, UTSA treks east to the Bayou City for the Flo Hyman Classic. The Roadrunners are slated to visit HCU (Sept. 17) and Houston (Sept. 18) before facing rival Texas State in a neutral bout on Sept. 19.
