SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s tennis team wrapped up its first competition of the fall, with the squad going 14-1 in open singles and four winning their flights at the 2026 Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Junior Enzo Vargas started things out with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 win over Mikel Garmendia of the host school before topping Abilene Christian’s Luis Jose Nakamine, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 in the Blue Flight semifinals. He then finished things out with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 victory against Dennis Ditine of ACU to take the top spot.
Freshman Gabriel Jalouneix was champion of the Green Flight, first besting Egor Gorin of TAMUCC, 6-0, 6-1, ahead of wins over UTRGV’s Aleksandar Hudjec, 6-2, 6-1 and UIW’s Alejandro Flores Monteverde, 6-1, 6-4.
Fellow newcomer Dmitri Goubin and sophomore Timeo Bretin were co-champs in the Red Flight, with Goubin topping the Islanders’ Jami Savolainen 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 10-6 in the quarterfinals and the Wildcats’ Jorge Aza Casaseca 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Bretin found wins over UTRGV’s Santiago Serrano Hudobro, 6-2, 6-3, and ACU’s Merse Deli, 7-5, 6-0.
Also in action, freshman Joel Hansson fell to Gus Tettamlbe of ACU, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, in the opener of the Purple Flight, but finished strong with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tsz Him Chan of UTRGV and a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Dani Lopez Adelino from TAMUCC.
The ‘Runners will be back in action at the ITA Texas Regionals, spanning Oct. 8-12 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
