Offense shines in season's first sweep

SAN ANTONIO – On Friday, UTSA Volleyball hosted Tarleton State for a non-conference matchup from the Convocation Center. The Roadrunners dominated the visitors, hitting .344 while holding the Texans to just .009 and improving to 3-2 overall. With the sweep, Carol Price-Torok’s bunch remained unbeaten at home and climbed above .500 for the first time in 2026.

Set-by-set: UTSA wins 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-13)

FIRST SET

The two sides split the first 10 rallies before Tarleton State ripped off a five-point run, setting up Isabella Arroyave’s ace that capped a four-point response from the hosts. Gigi Mason then followed up two Sydney Bryant kills to force a Texans timeout down 17-14. Each of the Roadrunners’ final seven points came courtesy of Tarleton State errors, clinching the opening frame at 25-19.

SECOND SET

An early three-point swing pushed Tarleton State ahead 7-5, but the edge was short-lived as Alyssa Manitzas headed back to the service line. Arroyave landed a trio of kills amid a 7-1 burst before taking over serving duties. The junior commanded an eight-point run of her own, adding an ace while Sydney Bryant and Caroline Tredwell teamed up for five kills during the stretch that pushed the hosts ahead 20-9. Five of the final six rallies went to the ‘Runners, including two Bryant terminations and a set-clinching block alongside Ledisi Kpea for a 25-12 win.

THIRD SET

Caroline Tredwell’s second ace of the evening fell early as her squad pushed ahead 6-1, carrying its momentum from set two. Kpea then landed back-to-back kills before Gigi Mason and Arroyave each came up with solo blocks to enter a media stoppage up 15-8. Four more Texan miscues got the Roadrunners to 20 points first, sending Tredwell back to the service line. The junior saw Kpea - her fellow middle blocker - reject consecutive swings from Tarleton State, setting up match point. The Texans’ 26th attack error capped things at 25-13, securing UTSA’s first sweep of the fall.

NUMBERS OF NOTE

  • The Roadrunners’ .344 hitting percentage was their highest in a match this season, besting Thursday’s mark of .224.
  • Six attack errors were easily the fewest by the Roadrunners this fall, coming in under the previous low of 21 in the regular-season opener against UT Arlington.
  • The last time UTSA posted six or fewer errors came against Holy Cross (four) on Sept. 6, 2024.
  • For the fourth straight match, Sydney Bryant paced her squad in kills, tallying 11 to go with two blocks and an assist.
  • Gigi Mason posted eight errorless kills against the Texans, hitting .421 to go with two blocks and as many digs.
  • Valeria Ortiz and Megan Hawkins matched each other in the box score with 14 assists apiece.
  • The former led her squad with a dozen digs on Friday, securing her second double-double of the young campaign.
  • The Navy & Orange amassed double-digit blocks for the second straight day, tallying 10 against the Texans.
  • Among Roadrunners with at least 30 attempts, Brooke Elliott now leads the charge with a .317 hitting percentage this season.
  • Isabella Arroyave matched a career high set one day prior, posting 10 digs in her second straight outing.
  • Ledisi Kpea finished the night with more blocks (six) than Tarleton State (four).
  • The first-year Roadrunner posted two blocks of the solo variety, adding five efficient kills and two digs.
  • Caroline Tredwell and Isabella Arroyave combined for all four of UTSA’s aces in the win, posting two each.
  • Alyssa Manitzas recorded her first collegiate kill, doing so as the starting libero on the third rally of the evening.
