MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — David Martinez and Bryce Womack are tied for sixth place and the UTSA men’s golf team is in second place after round one of the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate, which teed off Sunday at Grande Dunes Resort Club.
Martinez and Womack both posted a 4-under-par 68 to help lead the Roadrunners to an 11-under 277. UTSA is just one shot behind day-one leader Elon, one stroke ahead of Campbell and two better than Lipscomb (-9) in the 16-team field with 36 holes remaining.
All five Roadrunners in the lineup turned in a red number in the season-opening round, as Brayden Bare carded a 2-under 70, while Gabriel Derbez and Francisco Solorza registered 71s.
Martinez and Womack are part of an 8-way tie for sixth place, three shots off the pace set by Lipscomb’s Ciaran Murphy, who fired a 7-under 65.
Martinez wrote down five birdies against only one bogey in the first round of his third year with the Roadrunners. Teeing off from No. 10, he birdied both par fives on that side of the course, the 560-yard 13th and the 578-yard 17th, to get to 2-under. He then moved to the front where he circled his number on the 452-yard, par-4 first, the 566-yard, par-5 fourth and the 571-yard, par-5 seventh to get to 5-under par. The Houston native had a bogey on the eighth before rounding out his sub-70 scorecard with a par on the ninth.
Womack matched Martinez with five birdies and one bogey in his UTSA debut. The transfer and San Antonio Alamo Heights High School product recorded a four on No. 13 and a three on the 16th to get to 2-under through six holes. He then dropped to 5-under through 16 holes after birdies on the first, the sixth and the seventh before settling for a bogey on No. 9.
Bare, a fifth-year senior from Waco, is in a tie for 23rd after logging a 70 that featured three birdies and an eagle on the 578-yard, par-5 17th. In fact, he was one of five players in the field to register an eagle in the opening round.
Derbez and Solorza, both natives of Mexico, are knotted for 28th place.
Round two is slated for Monday.
