MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — David Martinez claimed a share of the Myrtle Beach Golf Trips Intercollegiate individual championship to lead UTSA to fourth place in the team race on Tuesday at Grande Dunes Resort Club.
Martinez closed out a 12-under-par 204 with a 3-under 69 on Tuesday to jump into a three-way tie for first place, earning his first collegiate victory in the process. The junior from Houston opened the 54-hole event with rounds of 68 and 67, the latter his top round versus par as a Roadrunner, en route to charting the second-best 36-hole total (-9/135) in program history. He shared medalist honors with the Coastal Carolina duo of Jack Lee and Drew Sykes.
Behind Martinez, the Roadrunners finished fourth in the 16-team field after registering a 9-under 277-293-285—855, UTSA finished two shots ahead of Campbell, three in front of Stetson and six better than Florida Atlantic.
Martinez entered the final round in second place after his career-best 36-hole total. He bounced back from a bogey on his opening hole with birdies on the 566-yard, par-5 fourth and the 365-yard, par-4 sixth. A bogey on the eighth forced him back to even par for the day, where he stood until he circled his number on back-to-back holes — Nos. 12-13 — to get to 2-under. He then birdied the 420-yard, par-4 16th and the 578-yard, par-5 17th, which put him into the lead before settling for a bogey on No. 18.
Martinez made 16 birdies and played the par fours at 5-under par for the week en route to shattering his previous collegiate best 54-hole score versus par of 1-under 215 set in February 2025.
Francisco Solorza fired a 2-under 70 in the final round to leap 12 spots into a tie for 19th place at 2-under 214. After opening with rounds of 71 and 73, the Guadalajara, Mexico, native wrote down four birdies over his final 18 holes to notch his sixth top-20 finish as a Roadrunner.
Gabriel Derbez joined his fellow countryman from Mexico with a 2-under-par scorecard in the final round, as the first-year player from Monterrey logged five birdies, including three in a row on Nos. 9-11, on Tuesday. He ended up with a share of 38th at 2-over 218 (71-77-70).
Brayden Bare and Bryce Womack rounded out the UTSA lineup in ties for 59th (70-76-76—222) and 67th (68-79-77—224), respectively.
Coastal Carolina, the tournament host, captured the team title with an 835, followed by Elon (844) and Lipscomb (846).
The Roadrunners will be back in action Sept. 21-22 at the Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, North Carolina.
