A former player for Austin Claunch during his time at Nicholls State, Piece Spencer reunites with Claunch as a graduate assistant on the 2024-25 UTSA basketball support staff.

Spencer’s final season of collegiate basketball was in 2023-24 at Milwaukee, where an injury prevented him from making any appearances as a member of Bart Lundy’s Panthers roster. Before transferring in his final season after Claunch joined the Alabama Staff, Spencer played three seasons at Nicholls and was part of consecutive regular season Southland Conference Championship teams for the Colonels. As a junior, he was named to the Southland Conference All-Defensive Team after averaging 7.7 points and 4.2 rebounds alongside a team-leading 1.6 steals per contest and 3.1 assists per game on the season. During his sophomore campaign, Spencer averaged 9.0 ppg, including 12 double-figure games in 30 appearances, while shooting 71.2 percent at the line and 32.1 from three, grabbing 5.4 boards, 2.3 assists and 1.6 steals per contest. As a rookie, he averaged 3.5 ppg and 3.2 rpg in 22 outings. In total at Nicholls, Spencer played in 73 games with averages of 6.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 2.0 assists, shooting 40.4 percent from the field and 31.8 percent beyond the arc.

Hailing from Porter, Texas, Spencer scored 2,107 (25.4 ppg) in a four-year high school career at Lake Creek High School in Montgomery, Texas, while playing for his father. Both of his parents played collegiate basketball, and he was The Courier of Montgomery County Player of the Year accolades and with Texas Class 5A All-State honors as a senior after recording per-game averages of 23.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 3.4 steals per game. Spencer also garnered District 20-5A MVP, first-team All-District, first-team All-Montgomery County and All-Region honors as both a junior and senior as well as a second-team All-District nod as a sophomore.
