The goal of the Athletics Compliance Office (CO) is to educate, monitor, and verify NCAA rules compliance with regard to each sport and component within the Athletics Department. The Compliance office strives to be proactive with education along with having monitoring systems in place that are effective and user friendly. UTSA compliance embraces open communication with faculty, staff, student-athletes and the community at large. It is compliance office’s position that all questions and requests for rules interpretations shall be answered in a friendly and timely manner. In addition, it should be known that no rules violation is too minor to be reported. In responding to rule violations, the CO will determine whether the violation was incidental or intentional and to what effect the violation will have on the involved coach, student-athlete or administrator.
The CO maintains an open-door policy and is designed to be student-athlete friendly. The CO functions as an office within the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at The University of Texas at San Antonio. It is the mission of the CO to provide a service to UTSA which is in alignment with the overall mission of the University.
Principle of Institutional Control — NCAA Constitution Article 2.1.1
It is the responsibility of each member institution to control its intercollegiate athletics program in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. The institution's president is responsible for the administration of all aspects of the athletics program, including approval of the budget and audit of all expenditures.
Principle of Institutional Responsibility — NCAA Constitution Article 2.1.2
The institution's responsibility for the conduct of its intercollegiate athletics program includes responsibility for the actions of its staff members and for the actions of any other individual or organization engaged in activities promoting the athletics interests of the institution.
Principle of Rules Compliance — NCAA Constitution Article 2.8.1
Each institution shall comply with all applicable rules and regulations of the NCAA in the conduct of its intercollegiate athletics programs. It shall monitor its programs to assure compliance and to identify and report to the NCAA instances in which compliance has not been achieved. In any such instance, the institution shall cooperate fully with the NCAA and shall take appropriate corrective actions. Members of an institution's staff, student-athletes, and other individuals and groups representing the institutions athletics interests shall comply with the applicable NCAA rules, and the member institution shall be responsible for such compliance.
