Roadrunners To Defend Conference Indoor Title This Weekend: The UTSA men’s track & field team, winners of the past two Southland Conference Indoor Championships, look for a three-peat this weekend at the SLC Indoor meet in Houston. Twenty-seven Roadrunners will travel to Bill Yeoman Field House for the two-day meet that begins on Friday morning.
Williams, Vese Among Nation’s Leaders: Sophomore Teddy Williams currently ranks 13th in the national standings in the 60 meters. His time of 6.66, set at the season-opening Houston Opener (Jan. 12), broke the league’s former record of 6.68 (Jared Connaughton’s, UT Arlington, 2006) It reestablished the UTSA mark of 6.71 he set at last year’s conference semifinals. The Tyler native also ranks first in the conference in the 200 meters with his time of 21.82b, which was recorded on Jan. 26 at the Blue & Orange Classic. Meanwhile, senior Will Vese’s time of 7.87 in the 60-meter hurdles ranks 19th nationally. The defending SLC Champion collected that mark on Feb. 9 at the Bayou City Classic and enters the meet in first place on the SLC leader board.
Brown, McGowen Also League Leaders: Senior Steven Brown and freshman P.J. McGowen enter the weekend atop the league standings in the long and high jump, respectively. Brown set a UTSA record on Jan. 26 when he broke former All-American Justin Youngblood’s seven-year-old mark (24-6 ?/7.48m) with a 24-6 ? (7.49m) measurement at the Blue & Orange Classic in Nampa, Idaho. McGowen, meanwhile, cleared 6-10 ? (2.09m) in his second collegiate meet, the Leonard Hilton Memorial (Jan. 18), and has remained at the top of the conference standings since that event.
Other 2008 Record Breakers: Two other Roadrunners have broken school records this season in addition to Brown and Williams. Sophomore Alton St. Rose broke the program’s triple jump record on Jan. 26 at the Blue & Orange Classic when he skipped to a 48-4 ? (14.75m) measurement to shatter the record of 47-9 ? (14.57m) that he set at last year’s Northern Arizona Team Challenge. Earlier in the year, senior Luke Johnson eclipsed his weight-throw standard with a toss of 55-2 (16.81m) at the Leonard Hilton Memorial (Jan. 18). Johnson previously set the mark at the 2006 SLC Championships with a throw of 53-9 ? (16.40m).
Griffin Looks To Defend 400-Meters Crown: Junior Gaston Griffin, the defending SLC Champion in the 400 meters, will try to become the first Roadrunner in school history to win consecutive titles in the event this weekend. Griffin, who enters the meet in eighth place in the league standings (49.22b), also will try to pick up the program’s sixth 400m crown in school history.
2007 Recap: Behind individual titles from Larry Brooks (800 meters), Gaston Griffin (400 meters) and Will Vese (60-meter hurdles), the UTSA men’s track & field team successfully defended its Southland Conference Indoor Championship at Bill Yeoman Field House. The Roadrunners scored 114.5 points, their second-most at a conference indoor meet in school history, and easily outdistanced UT Arlington, which finished in second place with 98 points. Head coach Aaron Fox was named SLC Indoor Coach of the Year for the second year in a row following the meet. The three gold medalists pushed the program’s all-time total to 34, 10 of which have come under the guidance of Fox.
