NEW ORLEANS ? The honors continue to come in for the UTSA men's track & field program, as sixth-year head coach Aaron Fox was named the South Central Region Coach of the Year, the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday.
"I am honored to receive this award," Fox said. "To be voted by my peers when coaches like John McDonnell (Arkansas) and Bubba Thornton (Texas) were also nominated, makes it that much more special. It's a great individual honor, but it couldn't have happened without the hard work of my assistant coaches and the athletes. They deserve just as much credit for this award."
Fox led his squad to its third consecutive Southland Conference Indoor Championship last month. Behind individual titles from an SLC-record six athletes ? senior Steven Brown (200 meters),senior Luke Johnson (shot put), freshman P.J. McGowen (high jump), sophomore Teddy Williams (60meters), junior Tommy Wolfe (heptathlon) and senior Will Vese (60-meterhurdles), UTSA successfully defended its title by scoring aschool-record 122 points toeasily outdistance Stephen F. Austin, which scored 101.5. A fixture on the Roadrunners track & field coaching staff for eight years, Fox now has mentored 16of the program's 40 individual league champions since taking over as head coach in 2003.
In each of the country’s nine regions, the USTFCCCA selected the topmen’s and women’s track athlete, field athlete, head coach andassistant coach for the 2008 NCAA Division I indoor season.
The Roadrunners open their outdoor season this weekend when they host the ninth annual UTSA Relays at the Blossom Athletics Complex.
