SAN ANTONIO — Coming off the third NCAA Tournament appearance in school history in 2013, the UTSA baseball team begins its quest for a fourth trip this weekend with a three-game series against Saint Peter’s. First pitch on Friday night is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Roadrunner Field. The series will continue the following afternoon with a 2 p.m. tilt and Sunday's finale is slated for 11 a.m.
The Roadrunners will miss the presence of 2013 Major League Baseball draft picks Riley Good and Daniel Rockett, but second-year head coach Jason Marshall has a host of standouts returning for another campaign this spring including 2013 leading hitter RJ Perucki, who was selected as a member of the preseason All-Conference USA team by the league's head coaches. Perucki led the team with a .350 average, 12 home runs and 132 total bases while tying for the team lead with 84 hits and 48 RBIs a year ago.
Leading the pitching staff will be Brock Hartson, a 2013 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and closer Matt Sims. The 6-foot-3 Hartson returned from Tommy John surgery in 2012 to post a 9-5 record with a 3.40 ERA and 50 strikeouts in a team-leading 106 innings. Meanwhile, Sims was a steadying force at the back end of the bullpen with eight saves while limiting opposing batters to a .176 batting average. The senior right-hander struck out 61 in 58.1 frames of work.
This weekend will be the first meetings between the two programs.
