Bertschy paces Roadrunners at Saturday's Bronco Invitational

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Monty Bertschy paced UTSA for the third time in as many outings this season at Saturday's Bronco Invitational.

Bertschy covered the Baylands Regional Park 8,000-meter loop in 24.51.7, which was good for 58th in the field of 173 runners. It marked the third time this fall that the junior from Boerne paced the Roadrunners.

Other scorers for UTSA included Saul Vasquez (91st/25:16.3), Alex Cruz (92nd/25:16.7), John von Dohlen (108th/25:32.4) and Peter Sepulveda (115th/25:39.2), as the Roadrunners placed 13th in the field of 18 Division I teams with their 349 points.

"It was a great competition today," Bertschy said. "I was really happy about the race. The course and the weather conditions were ideal to run a good time, which led to several of us running PRs. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the team will do at the conference meet in two weeks."

"I was proud of how the team competed this morning," Cross Country Coach David Hartman said. "It was a competitive field and I thought we handled it well. We are rounding into shape at the right time and will run our best at the Conference USA meet in two weeks."

San Jose State won the team title with 79 points and Gabe Arias-Sheridan of St. Mary's (Calif.) captured the individual crown in 23:27.8. UCLA (88) and UC Santa Barbara (117) rounded out the top three.

UTSA will take next weekend off before competing at the Conference USA Championships, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29, in Concord, N.C.
