HOUSTON — Adrian Riley finished in second place in the two-day heptathlon to lead the UTSA men's track & field team at this weekend's Houston Invitational.
Riley racked up 4,951 points in his first multi-event competition of the season en route to his silver medal. The junior from Kingston, Jamaica, saw his score bolstered by a day one victory in the 60 meters (7.19) and he was in second place after the first day of four events with 2,878 points. Houston's Nathaniel Mechler won the meet title with 5,376 points.
"This weekend was a good start to the season for me, but there is room for improvement," Riley said. "I just have to head back to practice and work harder, so I can be 100 percent when the conference meet comes around next month."
Other top performances for the Roadrunners this weekend came from Byron Taylor in the long jump and Gabe Vargas in the shot put, as the pair both finished in fourth place in their respective events. Taylor broke the sand in 22-7 (6.88m), while Vargas recorded a measurement of 53-11 ¼ (16.44m).
UTSA's other top-five finish of the two-day meet came from Derek Fenton, who placed fifth in the shot put with a career-best toss of 52-11 (16.13m).
"We had great performances the last two days," Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox said. "The team is making great strides every week and we are looking forward to going to New York next weekend."
The Roadrunners will travel to New York City next weekend for the two-day Armory Invitational, which is scheduled to begin next Friday, Feb. 3.
