SAN ANTONIO — UTSA Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Aaron Fox has added Maren Wilms, a two-time state champion in the heptathlon in her native Germany, to the 2019 signing class.
A native of Melsbach, Germany, Wilms won back-to-back State of Rhineland championships in the heptathlon with 4,781 points at the 2016 U18 and 4,579 at the 2017 U20. She finished fifth in the heptathlon with a personal-best 4,933 points at the 2018 U20 German Championship and captured a bronze medal in the pentathlon with 3,512 points at the 2017 U20 German Indoor Championship.
"We're excited to add Maren Wilms to the Roadrunner Family," Fox said. "She is one of the best multi-event athletes in Germany and we are confident she will have an immediate impact on our program."
Wilms won 2018 State of Rhineland U20 crowns in the 100m hurdles (15.66) and long jump (5.69m/18-8) and 2016 U18 titles in the heptathlon (4,781), 200m, high jump and long jump. She also claimed seven State of Rhineland-Palatinate Championship events from 2016-18. She owns personal bests of 1:02.97 in the 400m hurdles, 5.80 meters (19-0 ½) in the long jump and 1.69m (5-6 ½) in the high jump.
Wilms is the seventh announced member of UTSA's 2019 signing class, as she joins women's signees Vera Chinedu, Ana Carolin Da Silva, Natasha Purchas and Zoie Reyna and men's signees Oquendo Bernard and Jack Turner.
