SAN ANTONIO -- UTSA track & field has announced the signing of standout Jamaican sprinter Shivnarine Smalling for the 2020-21 athletics season.
A native of St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, Smalling joins the Roadrunners after a stint at Western Texas College.
"I am excited to announce the signing of Shivnarine Smalling," UTSA's director of track & field/cross country Aaron Fox said. "He is one of Jamaica's top young sprint talents and will make an immediate impact in Conference USA and the NCAA sprinting events with the world class times he has run. We are looking forward to helping him reach his goals both academically and athletically while he is here with us at UTSA."
Smalling broke out as a standout sprinter after running a 10.08w at the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque in June of 2016. It was a thrilling finish that saw Smalling edge out current Texas A&M standout sprinter Jace Comick, who finished with a 10.09.
Smalling owns personal bests in the 60m (6.65), 100m (10:08w, 10.24) and 200m (20.93). He finished 13th in the 100 in the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in May of 2018 and finished second in the 100m at the 2018 Texas Tech Masked Rider Invite with a 10.24 time. He finished fourth in the NJCAA Indoor Championships in the 60m in 2017.
In international competition, Smalling finished fifth in the 100m, fourth in the 200m at the 2016 Jamaican Championships and was a member of the 4x100 relay team that won the gold medal for Kingston College.
