BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Maia Campbell, Ingeborg Gruenwald and Grant Szalek each earned medals and Jack Turner leads the field in the heptathlon after the first day of competition at the 2020 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by UAB at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
After six events on the first day of the event, the UTSA men sit in third place with 31 points, behind first-place Charlotte (52 points) and second-place Rice (34.5). The UTSA women are currently in third place with 25 points, with Southern Miss (30) and Rice (28) leading the charge.
Szalek claimed a silver medal with a clearance of 2.06 meters (6-9) in the men's high jump, part of an event that saw the Roadrunners earn 18 points with five top-seven finishers.
Ingeborg captured the bronze in the women's long jump with a leap of 6.18m (20-3.5), while Campbell was third with a measurement of 18.69m (61-3.5) in the weight throw.
Szalek, a junior out of Perth, Australia, finished second in the high jump with a 2.06m (6-9) measurement to pace four Roadrunners who finished in the top eight. Jake McDaniel was fifth after clearing 2.00m (6-6.75), with Turner placing sixth (2.00m/6-6.75). Gary Haasbroek and Jamal Anderson tied for seventh after topping 1.97m (6-5.5).
Turner leads the field through the first four events in the heptathlon. The freshman from Exeter, England, has accumulated 2,933 points through five events, including clocking a 7.18 in the 60m, leaping to a 6.95m (22-9.75) mark in the long jump and clearing 1.97m (6-.5.5) in the high jump. He finished the first day with a mark of 10.83m (35-6.5) in the shot put.
Just behind Turner in second place in the heptathlon is McDaniel with a one-day total of 2,841. The senior from Houston clocked a 7.42 in the 60m, had a 6.85m (22-5.75) measurement in the long jump, a 1.97m (6-5.5) mark in the high jump and an 11.03m (35-6.5) measurement in the shot put.
Haasbroek led UTSA in the pole vault with a sixth-place clearance of 4.83m (15-10). Sophomore Marcus Ramirez placed eighth after vaulting over 4.53m (14-10.25).
The men's distance medley relay team of Zack Kovar, Andrew Pirog, Caleb Devereaux and Matthew David passed the baton to a time of 10:22.53 to earn sixth place and three points.
In men's prelim action, sophomore Bashiru Abdullahi paced the field in the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.91. Devall Harris, a junior, placed ninth with a time of 8.32.
Senior Mikael Dawkins, a native of Leander, Texas, led the field in the 60m dash with a 6.75 clocking. He also qualified in the 200m with a time of 21.63, the seventh-fastest time of the day.
Brett Winnegan also advanced to Sunday's 60m final after crossing in 6.89. A four-year UTSA football letterwinner and the program's all-time leader in kickoff returns, he also placed fourth in the long jump with a mark of 7.09m (23-3.25).
Haasbrook took eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.94m (22-9.25), while Andre Douglas placed ninth with a mark of 6.86m (22-6.25).
Caleb Devereaux, a senior from Pearland, Texas, qualified for the 800m final with a time of 1:50.70.
On the women's side, Gruenewald and Campbell each earned medals to highlight the Roadrunners on the first day.
Gruenwald posted her best jump of the day on her second attempt to lead a trio of Roadrunners who scored points in the event. Sigrid Kleive placed fifth with a mark of 5.97m (19-7), with Danielle Spence leaping to a mark of 5.66m (18-7) for eighth.
Campbell saved her best throw for last, as the senior from Converse Judson High School moved into a podium finish with a personal-best heave, bettering her previous PR of 18.46m posted earlier this month at the Charlie Thomas Invitational.
Meanwhile, Maren Wilms finished fourth in the pentathlon with a total of 3,495 points. The freshman ran 9.56 in the 60m hurdles, cleared 1.64m (5-4.5) in the high jump, measured 9.46m (31-0.5) in the shot put, leaped 5.32m (17-5.5) in the long jump and crossed in 2:23.67 in the 800m.
The women's DMR quartet of Sofia Salinas, Creshaun Cresser, Brooke Lomax and Amber Boyd finished sixth with a time of 12:12.18.
In preliminary action on the track, senior Converse Judson High School product Darionne Gibson qualified for the finals in the 400m dash with a time of 56.74.
Senior Olivia Esemena and Vera Chinedu each qualified for the finals in the 60m dash, with Esemena owning the second-best time of 7.54 and Chinedu at sixth with a time of 7.56.
Esemena also qualified for the finals with a time of 24.45 in the 200m dash, while Taylor Armstrong clocked the sixth-fastest time of 24.48.
The final day of the C-USA Indoor will get underway with field events starting at 11 a.m. and running events at 1 p.m.
