SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head coach Pat Hallmark announced Thursday that Bowling Green transfer James Ward has joined the Roadrunners' 2020 signing class.
"We are excited Jay is joining our pitching staff," Hallmark said. "He adds experience and a left-handed option for us both as a starter and in the bullpen."
The Lake Villa, Illinois native tossed 19 1/3 innings over 14 games – all out of the bullpen - with the Falcons, stranding nearly two-thirds of inherited runners on base. Ward recorded a 6.05 ERA, allowing 16 runs, 13 earned, on 18 hits and nine walks, while striking out 13.
As a sophomore, he appeared in five of his team's 13 contests, tossing 7 1/3 innings in relief, posting a 2.45 ERA and 0.95 WHIP before the early termination of the 2020 season. Ward allowed three runs – two earned – on four hits, three walks and fanning six. His .167 opponent batting average was best on the team, while ranking third with three runs allowed and two earned runs.
Ward worked 12.0 innings in nine games as a freshman, punching out seven hitters and walking six. He stranded 60 percent of the runners he inherited.
His accolades at Carmel Catholic High School include East Suburban Catholic Conference All-Conference First Team, Second Team All-State and team Pitcher of the Year after carding a 7-1 record with a 1.46 ERA and 1.100 WHIP.
