Roadrunners unveil 2021 schedule

Roadrunners release 2021 schedule, featuring 49 games

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA baseball will host 20 games at Roadrunner Field as part of its 50-game 2021 schedule, it was announced on Thursday by head coach Pat Hallmark.

"We are excited about our 2021 schedule," Hallmark said. "This was the most unique and challenging schedule we've had to put together. It will allow our student-athletes the opportunity to compete against some of the top teams in the nation in non-league play, all while getting us ready for an unprecedented conference schedule. We are grateful to Dr. Taylor Eighmy and Dr. Lisa Campos for their steadfast support of our program and student-athletes, providing us a chance for our players to compete against the best each day of the season."

UTSA will play five non-conference weekends as part of its 13-week regular season schedule, will play a total of two midweek games, and will host 20 total games at Roadrunner Field. The Roadrunners will play eight Conference USA four-game weekends, traditionally on Friday-Sunday, with seven-inning doubleheaders slated for Saturdays.

UTSA will host Utah to open the season in a three-game series at Roadrunner Field, starting at 4 p.m. on Feb. 19 in San Antonio. UTSA will then hit the road to face Southland Conference powerhouse Sam Houston in Huntsville, Texas Feb. 26-28.

The Roadrunners welcome Sun Belt frontrunner UT Arlington March 5-7 to Roadrunner Field, before hosting traditional power TCU on March 10.

UTSA will then hit the road for an 11-game road swing to conclude March, traveling to play three in Baton Rouge, La., at Alex Box Stadium, facing LSU on March 12 and March 14 and Baylor on March 13. UTSA will venture to face Baylor on March 16 in Waco, Texas.

The Roadrunners will then play three games at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 19-21 before opening league play at Rice on March 28-28.

UTSA will open a season-long eight-game homestand on April 1-3 with four games against Southern Miss, then welcoming Middle Tennessee on April 9-11.

The Roadrunners will venture to Charlotte on April 16-18, host Rice for a return trip on April 23-25, before traveling to the Magic City to face UAB April 30-May 2.

UTSA will wrap up its conference home schedule May 7-9 with Old Dominion.

Just under two weeks away from the Conference USA Championships – hosted by Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. – UTSA will conclude its regular-season league slate at LA Tech May 14-16.

A home finale with UIW on May 18 will wrap up the regular season schedule, with the league tournament slated for LA Tech's new facility on May 26-30.

The Roadrunners return several standouts entering Hallmark's second year. Sluggers Dylan Rock and Nick Thornquist will help lead the offensive attack, with Rock coming off an abbreviated season that saw hit him .365 (23-for-63) with six doubles, one homer, 10 RBI and 10 steals. Thornquist slugged nine homers as a junior in 2019 and drove in six in 12 games in 2020. Returning starters Leyton Barry, Griffin Paxton, Joshua Lamb, Jonathan Tapia, Taylor Barber and Chase Keng will help bolster the offense.

On the mound, righty Shane Daughety made four starts with just four walks and 17 strikeouts in 20.2 innings in 2020. Hunter Mason picked up a pair of saves in seven relief outings, and righty Arturo Guajardo is coming off a splashing summer that saw him return from injury to become one of the top relievers in the Texas Collegiate League.

Information regarding fan attendance will be announced at a later time.
