SAN ANTONIO - UTSA women's basketball head coach Karen Aston announced the signing of Hailey Atwood, her first signee at the helm of the Roadrunners.
"I am thrilled to add Hailey to the Roadrunner family," Aston said. "She comes from a winning culture at Bowie High under Coach Benson and has continued that at Blinn under Jeff Jenkins. Hailey embodies everything I expect from a student-athlete and I can't wait for her to share her competitive spirit with our current players and staff. She is a perfect fit here in San Antonio."
Atwood transfers from Blinn College where she has played the last two years under head coach Jeff Jenkins.
"Hailey was a good freshman for a good team in 2019-20," Jenkins said. "She averaged 10 points a game and was one of our best defenders. She was left off the all-conference team and I had to call her and tell her how much she meant to us and I thought it was a big mistake. She seemed to play this season like there was a chip on her shoulder. She averaged 18.5 points, seven rebounds, and three assists for us. She competes so hard not only every game but also every practice. She also competes in the classroom also with a 4.0 GPA. A truly special player off and on the court who deserves everything she is getting."
At Blinn, Atwood played in 24 games as a sophomore last year, with 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game. In 16 conference games, she averaged 20 points, 3.0 assists and 8.2 rebounds per game as a sophomore. She had nine games with 20 or more points, including a season-high of 34 points in a win over Bossier Parish. She went for 20+ in six straight games midway through league play.
She averaged 9.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game as a freshman in 2019-20, ranking second on the team with 94 assists and 18 blocks. She earned NJCAA Academic All-America honors.
