SAN ANTONIO — UTSA's Amaya Scott is the top collegian in the women's heptathlon and Jack Turner is in second place in the men's decathlon after the opening day of the Roadrunner Invitational, which got underway Thursday at Park West Athletics Complex.
Scott has scored 3,128 points through the first four events of the seven-event competition that will span two days. The Romsey, England, native is in third place overall behind a pair of unattached competitors in Jordan Gray (3,354) and Lindsay Flach (3,295) and is 229 points ahead of the next closest collegian, Niki Xydona of Grand Canyon (2,899).
Scott opened her day with a time of 15.06 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, good for 834 points. The 2021 Conference USA Indoor high jump bronze medalist then cleared 1.66 meters (5-5.25) for 806 points before measuring 12.85m (42-2) for 717 more in the shot put. Scott closed out her Thursday with a 26.30 clocking in the 200m for 771 points.
Meanwhile Turner is in a tight race for the decathlon title, as the 2021 C-USA Indoor Field Performer of the Meet has tallied 3,955 points, good for second place at the halfway of the competition. The Exeter, England, native is only 41 points behind Texas' Leo Neugebauer, who leads the 16-man field with 3,996 points.
Turner started his first decathlon as a Roadrunner by clocking an 11.06 in the 100m for 847 points. He then leaped 7.00m (22-11.75) for 814 points in the long jump before adding 681 more with a mark of 13.23m (43-5) in the shot put. The two-time C-USA Indoor heptathlon champion then cleared 1.95m (6-4.75) in the high jump and circled the track in a time of 49.14 for 855 points in the 400m.
Joel McFarlane is not far behind his teammate in third place with 3,705 points. The Monikie, Scotland, native clocked an 11.15 for 827 points in the 100m before breaking the sand at a distance of 6.93m (22-9) for 797 in the long jump. The 2021 C-USA Indoor heptathlon runner-up posted a 10.39m (34-1.25) measurement in the shot put and cleared 1.80m (5-10.75) in the high jump before rounding out his day with a time of 49.14 in the 400m.
Meanwhile, Justin Wright is in sixth place with 3,275 points in the decathlon. The reigning C-USA Indoor heptathlon bronze medalist posted a time of 11.78 in the 100m, a long jump of 6.68m (21-11), a shot put mark of 10.39m (34-1.25), a clearance of 1.80m (5-10.75) in the high jump and a 52.46 clocking in the 400m.
Maren Wilms is ninth place overall and seventh among collegiate competitors with 2,764 points in the heptathlon. The Melsbach, Germany, native posted marks of 15.39 in the 100m hurdles, 1.60m (5-3) in the high jump, 10.04m (32-11.25) in the shot put and 27.08 in the 200m.
On Friday, the heptathlon long jump and decathlon 110m hurdles will kick things off at 10 a.m. Field events are slated to start at 2 p.m. with the women's hammer throw and the men's shot put, while the distance runners will take to the track at 8 p.m. for the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m. Spectators are not allowed inside Park West Athletics Complex due to COVID-19 protocols.
