LAREDO, Texas — Hunter Bott and Christian Fanfelle are in the top 25 individuals and the UTSA men's golf team is in eighth place after the opening day of the Border Olympics on Monday at Laredo Country Club (par 72/7,204 yards).
Bott has a share of 13th place at 1-over par and Fanfelle is one shot behind in a tie for 22nd after 36 holes. Meanwhile, the Roadrunners posted a 296 in each round and are a pair of strokes ahead of New Mexico State and only four back of Rice in the 14-team field with 18 holes left to play.
Bott opened the tournament with a 3-over 75 and bounced back with a 2-under 70 in the afternoon. The Montgomery, Texas, native posted birdies on Nos. 1 and 18 and an eagle on the 550-yard, par-5 17th hole to highlight his second round.
Fanfelle turned in the Roadrunners' low opening round with an even-par 72 that featured three birdies, including back-to-back on Nos. 15-16. The San Antonio native posted a 74 with two more birdies in round two to settle into 22nd.
Jack Wehman is tied for 38th at 6-over 150 after posting rounds of 76 and 74 on the strength of a team-high eight birdies on the day.
Michael Rome has a share of 46th at 7-over 151, using an eagle on No. 17 to headline an opening-round 73 before posting a 78 in the afternoon.
David Harrison is tied for 67th (77-78—155) to close out the UTSA lineup.
Competing as individuals, Carson Gallaher is tied for 38th and Patrick Kahanek is in 46th. Gallaher opened with a 73 that featured four birdies and an eagle on the 17th hole before turning in a 77 in the second round. Kahanek wrote down two birdies apiece in his rounds of 77 and 74.
Houston leads the team standings at 9-under 567, followed by a tie between No. 50 Baylor and Sam Houston at 2-under 574.
Baylor's Johnny Keefer sits atop the individual leaderboard at 7-under 137 (68-69).
The final round is slated for Tuesday.
